Friends and family of a Cupar community stalwart who died earlier this month lined the streets on Tuesday morning to pay their respects to a “true gentleman”.

Gordon Hughes, 63, was well-known across Fife and was an active member of the Cupar community through his involvement with Cupar Hearts, the golf club and work with Fife Council.

He retired from the fire service in 2012 and his funeral cortege was escorted by the crew from Cupar Community Fire Station for a section of the route.

Mourners watched as the cortege travelled by Duffus Park, Balgarvie Road, the Westport, Bonnygate and on to St Catherine Street before heading out of town via the East Road for a private funeral.

Scores of people paused and bowed their heads as it made its way through the town centre, accompanied by fire crews.

A spokesperson for Cupar Community Fire Station said: “Gordon retired from the fire service in 2012 but remained a massive part of everyone’s life’s as a friend.

“Gordon was one of a kind, a true gentleman that always made time to speak and offer his advice. A passionate man.”

Mr Hughes is survived by his wife Kathleen, his children Grant, Leanne and Paul and six grand-children.

His son Grant said his dad would be sorely missed by all who knew him.

“He was such a huge part of our lives and poured his heart and soul into the community where we know he was held in such high regard,” he said.
