An abandoned 200-year-old Perthshire church will go up for auction this week with a guide price of £75,000.
Redgorton and Stanley Parish Church was given a “terminal diagnosis” by building inspectors following damage sustained during Storm Frank in 2016 and has lain empty ever since.
The B-listed building has fallen into dilapidation but selling agents believe the landmark can be transformed into luxury flats or a mansion house.
Church of Scotland sold the building to private owners in February believing it would cost around £500,000 to make the building safe in the short term and over a million to secure it for the future.
Despite the repair job, selling agents Online Property Auctions Scotland (OPAS) claim the church, built in 1828, represents “one of the most unique” development opportunities to be brought to the market when it goes before bidders on Thursday.
An OPAS spokesperson said: “Rarely available landmark former church building in the heart of the idyllic Perthshire town of Stanley.
“Ideal for flats or incredible mansion house.
“Excellent possible development potential over 7800 sq ft in size with traditional features retained.
“One of the most unique and incredible development opportunities to be brought to the market in recent years.
“This property is likely to attract substantial interest from local and national developers seeking a bespoke opportunity to create something special, subject to gaining necessary building and planning consents.”
The church is listed as duplex layout over two floors and a further bell tower.
The historic clock on the steeple of the church has also caught the attention of conservationists who are hoping to salvage the mechanism.
The cogs and gears which turn the clock’s hands were built in 1850 by highly regarded inventor and engineer Richard Roberts and is believed to be one of only two surviving contraptions of its kind.
Also before bidders at the same auction is the opportunity to buy four commercial properties on the same Dundee street.
The Albert Street premises are going under the hammer in individual lots with guide prices ranging from £21,000 to £78,000.
The four shops are currently let to a tanning lounge, barbers, grooming parlour and an ice cream parlour.
