A new training facility will be set up in Perth thanks to a windfall for a local rugby team.

Perthshire Rugby Club was awarded £41,500 from Scottish Rugby, which will be used to create a strength and conditioning room inside Bell’s Sports Centre.

It is hoped the training facilities will be available for other sports clubs and members of Live Active Leisure, as well as rugby players.

The cash was given as part of Scottish Rugby’s bid to support the sport at a grassroots level. It will boost the club’s development programme for under 13s through to senior level.

Andy Ritchie, treasurer of Perthshire Rugby, said: “We have been working closely with Live Active Leisure, to secure this additional opportunity for Perthshire Rugby and the people of Perth, building on the current strength and conditioning facilities.

“The dedicated will be adjacent to our clubhouse and changing facilities in Bell’s Sports Centre.

“Expert strength and conditioning tuition can make a real difference to an athlete’s performance, power and mental strength. Rugby athletes, Live Active Leisure members and customers and elite athletes from other sports will have access to this new dedicated facility which will help them to maximise their potential.”

The funding comes as Perthshire Rugby celebrates 150 years as a club and the 50th anniversary of Bell’s Sports Centre.

Paul Cromwell, chief executive Offer of Live Active Leisure, said: “This joint project goes a long way to providing an excellent offer for athletes and sports people at all levels and we welcome the opportunity to work with our long-standing partners from Perthshire Rugby.

“Live Active’s investment into the project makes a strong statement about our support for club development and athlete progression as well as delivering an excellent new addition for our gym customers.”
