Talented Perth Academy students will see their artwork displayed in New York this month to celebrate the Year of The Glove.
The artwork will be the focal point of the opening of a year-long exhibition in Gloversville in New York state in recognition of the strong historic ties between the American town and Perth.
The Hand in Glove exhibition was first showcased in June 2017 at the Fair Maid’s House in Perth before going on display at the Scottish Parliament last year when student’s travelled down to the capital to showcase their work.
The artwork, which explores the history of the glove-making trade and its role in the economic development of Perth, will get its first international exhibition.
The show was the brainchild of Perth Academy art teacher Alison Ferguson who was intrigued by the story following a meeting with Peter Wilson of the Perth Incorporation of Glovers, and shared her interest with her students.
Ms Ferguson said: “It’s quite a big deal, it’s been quite nice.
“It all started off with £150 from the Perth Incorporation of Glovers and this all built up from that.”
The exhibition will become the centrepiece of the Year of the Glove exhibition run by the Fulton County Historical Society and the Fulton County Museum in Gloversville.
Ms Ferguson said: “The whole thing they’re doing is very good.
“They have a lot of competitions with local schools and our exhibit is the focal point because our art sparked it.”
The Fulton Museum has advertised the exhibition by saying: “The public is invited to view art work on loan from Perth, Scotland students in recognition of the historic ties between Perth, Scotland and our area where Perth farmers versed in tanning and glove-making settled in mid-17th century.”
Johnny Lothian, Rector at Perth Academy, thanked all those involved in creating the exhibition.
He said: “It’s been a real pleasure to work with Peter Wilson and the Perth Incorporation of Glovers and we have been delighted in the partnership activity to have created such an interesting and thought-provoking exhibition which has captured the imagination of the young people in Perth Academy and the wider community in Perth.
“We’re really, really proud of our young people and what they’ve done in art and this art exhibition and project.
“We would like to congratulate all the young people involved and thank Ms Ferguson and the art department.”
