An exhibition polo match in Perthshire is set to raise thousands of pounds for wounded, injured and ill war veterans.

The St Andrews University Polo Club’s annual fundraiser – the largest event of its kind in Scotland – takes place at Errol Park at the end of the month.

Around 2,000 people are expected to take part in the tournament, which has raised more than £36,000 for Help For Heroes since its humble beginnings in 2014.

This year promises to be the biggest event yet, with teams signing up from all over the globe.

Last year, a team from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards took on players from St Andrews.

A spokesman for the event said: “Since its beginning as a small, university-set event, the tournament has grown to national notoriety, attracting sponsors including Maldon Sea Salt and Glenfiddich.

“What’s more is that this year we will be host to an international cohort of teams for the first time. As well as hosting teams from all over the UK , we also have teams from Australia and the US.

“It has been this exponential growth that has led our event to the top of the Scottish polo calendar for the past few years.

“Now eclipsing just over 2,000 attendees, we are the largest polo tournament in Scotland.”

Gaynor Jordan-Davis, head of regional fundraising at Help for Heroes added: “We would like to thank St Andrews University and all those involved in the Polo Tournament for their support.

“We believe those who put their life on the line for their country deserve to be looked after properly if they are injured.

“We are proud to have supported so many men and women over the past decade, but with seven people leaving the armed forces injured every day, there are many more still in need of support. These generous donation will help us be there for those brave men and women.”

Help for Heroes supports military personnel and veterans who have suffered injuries or illness during or as a result of service which impacts on their daily life. The charity also supports families of those wounded.

The charity can also help with mental health, physical health, welfare and finances and careers.

The Polo Tournament will be held on Saturday April 27.
