A runaway caravan caused travel chaos on one of Perthshire’s busiest roads.

Two cars were involved in a collision with the mobile home after it suddenly detached from its towing vehicle on the edge of Scone.

No one was badly hurt in the accident, which happened just after 2.30pm on Wednesday.

Police at the scene of the crash.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene and the road was partially blocked for more than an hour, causing lengthy tailbacks in all directions.

The unhitched caravan is understood to have struck the driver’s side of a red Volkswagen Golf, pushing it off the road.

A grey Skoda Fabia was also involved in the collision and suffered visible damage to its front.

The Abbey GTS model caravan was also left extensively damaged.

Two police officers directed traffic, while recovery crews were called in to collect the vehicles and clear up debris.

A witness said: “The area was gridlocked, but the police managed to get things moving.

“A young woman was in one of the cars. She seemed okay, but obviously very shaken up. It must have been terrifying.

“Thankfully, this was at a slow part of the road. If this had happened somewhere else, on an open road, it could have been a lot more serious.”

The crash happened on a 40mph stretch on the southern edge of Scone. Traffic was left queuing for about a mile along Perth Road, with tailbacks on Mayfield Terrace and Burnside.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said one person suffered an arm injury but it was not thought to be serious.

He said: “Police Scotland have attended on the A94 Perth Road between Perth and Scone in response to a road traffic collision.

“A towed caravan has been involved in a collision with at least one other car. One person has an arm injury but is not seriously injured.

“The road was kept open and we were able to keep traffic moving.”

The road was fully cleared by 4.30pm.
