Brechin businessman Alfred Forbes

Mr Forbes

The funeral of well-respected Brechin businessman Alfred Forbes will take place on Wednesday after his death in a tragic road accident. He was 75.

Known to friends and family as Fred, Mr Forbes ran the Savoy fish and chip shop in Market Street, Brechin for more than three decades.

He died in a single-vehicle accident on the B966 at Trinity on December 22.

Mr Forbes was born to Nelly and George (Dode) Forbes, one of three boys and three girls, at Nether Tarves, Aberdeenshire in 1941.

He attended Esslemont School and Ellon Academy before leaving to become a dairyman and cattle worker at farms in the area.

Mr Forbes became familiar with north Angus as his work often brought him to Laurencekirk, and he bought the “Sav” from his brother-in-law around 1980 after spending a year in Brechin.

He ran the shop with his late wife Evelyn, who was known as Evie.

Mr Forbes retired through ill health in 2015 and moved from the town to Taranty, where he enjoyed his garden.

As a younger man he enjoyed fishing and motorcycle touring, and the Forbes’ enjoyed annual foreign holidays when their four children had grown.

Mr Forbes was known for his propensity to whistle, and visitors to the Savoy were welcomed with a tune and a cheery smile.

All friends are invited to the service room of William Black’s, 1a Latch Road, on January 18 at 11.30am, thereafter to Parkgrove Crematorium, Friockheim arriving at 12.30pm.

Donations can be made to the British Diabetic Association in lieu of flowers.
