Dundee United boss demands ‘high standards’ after Jamie Robson gets caught up in new off-field controversy

Young defender Jamie Robson has been reminded by manager Robbie Neilson of the high standards expected of him as a Dundee United player.

The 20-year-old’s appearance on social media over the weekend ‘blacked up’ for a fancy dress party has been roundly criticised by many fans.

The Tangerines immediately launched an investigation and, while that is being carried out internally, his boss has spoken out.

“The standards at this football club have to be kept at the highest level. I think it’s important that whether you’re on the pitch, off the pitch, whatever it is and even in your social life, you have to keep those high standards,” said Robbie.

“The club will deal with it in-house so I can’t really say too much but the standards have to be high.

“These things have a process to go through and also he’s an employee of the football club so there’s confidentiality there as well.

“But the standards here have got to be of the highest level. We are a big football club and we’ve got a lot of exposure here.”

The United players were off on Monday but Robson was hauled before the manager first thing when he reported back for training yesterday and there’s been a meeting with club officials.

Having been in trouble over a video of him filmed in a car last year, he’s likely to be fined.

For Robbie, the message he is determined to get over is everyone at United must realise what is and isn’t acceptable.

“The players and staff, and everyone associated, have to realise it’s not just on the pitch or on the training ground, it’s when you are out and about, doing different things, representing the club.”
