A Carnoustie charity venture has handed over £23,500 to deserving local causes.

Popular Carnoustie couple Dave and Babs Hodgson, along with the team of volunteers, raised the money through the Haven charity shop in the town.

Twenty four individuals, clubs and organisations across a broad range of needs and activities received financial boosts ranging from £500, to £2,000.

Carnoustie Boys Brigade received £1,000, £2,000 went to Carnoustie Coastguard Association and Marie Curie Nurses benefitted from £1,000.

The Haven was opened in 2014, and the team of more than twenty volunteers have raised an astonishing £92,500 since then, with all the money raised going to local deserving causes.

Co-founder Dave Hodgson said: “We are not far off breaking the £100,000 barrier, and we hope that the influx of visitors for the Open will get us across the line.

“We can only raise these sums of money thanks to the amazing team of volunteers, and of course the generosity of people who donate all kinds of items for us to sell.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their support over the years, and would encourage people to keep donating unwanted items for us to sell.

“All the money raised locally goes straight to Carnoustie groups or organisations that serve the town.”

£1,000 went Carnoustie Air Cadets, Befrienders also received £1,000, with Barry Brownies getting £500.

The shop’s co-founders have previously been recognised for their good works, when they jointly received the accolade of Citizens of the Year in 2013, winning praise from Carnoustie Community Council.

Other sums included £1,000 each to Stacey Spears and Kieron Hingston.

Carnoustie Community Choir benefitted to the tune of £500, along with the same sum going to Dibbletree Theatre.

Medical charities were also to the fore in the presentations, with Medical Group equipment fund receiving £500, £1,000 going the Medical Group transport fund, and the Dementia Dog Project enjoying a £1,000 boost.

Carnoustie Memories Group, and the High School Fencing Club each received £1,000.

Social Eyes and Christian Clark benefitted from £1,000 each, while £2,000 will help keep the High School Brass Band in tune.

Murray Bartle received £500, and the Dave and Margaret Memorial Fund got £1,000.

The Kevin Christie Fund was on the higher end of the scale with a £2,000 award, with Woodlands Primary School Eco Council benefitting from £800, and Carlogie Primary School receiving £500.

Friends of Guiding are also on the right track with £700.

The presentations took place at the Haven charity shop on the town’s High Street.
