A man who lashed out at blue-light staff in a “nasty” Angus incident has been placed on an electronic tag.
Police and paramedics had been called to help Ronald Stewart in Montrose after passersby became concerned about him falling around in the street on July 1.
But the 33-year-old was entirely uncooperative and eventually had to be handcuffed and put in leg restraints for a journey to police headquarters where he told officers: “If I see you in the Hilltown, I’ll stab you”.
Stewart, of Arklay Street, Dundee, appeared for sentencing at Forfar Sheriff Court having previously admitted charges of breaching the peace, police assault and attempting to assault a police officer.
Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said Stewart had been arrested around 2.15pm after lashing out in the back of an ambulance, but continued his threats towards paramedics and police.
He hit one police officer on the shoulder, tried to headbutt and bite others and shouted: “I’ll cut your throat”.
Solicitor Billy Rennie said: “It was a nasty incident, but he hasn’t troubled the courts for five years.”
Sheriff Derek Reekie told Stewart: “Your violence, your language and your threats are just appalling.”
He noted from a background report the incident had been at a time Stewart was dealing with a “traumatic incident”, but added: “To behave this way towards police and ambulance staff trying to help you is not acceptable.”
Stewart was placed on a restriction of liberty order for 162 days, confining him to his home between 7pm and 7am daily.
