A callous thief stole £4,500 from her own grandmother after finding her bank card and pin number.

Pamela Leitch, of Lochee Road, Dundee, admitted repeatedly withdrawing cash from the frail 86-year-old’s account without her knowing.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard Leitch, 38, was only caught when the pensioner’s other relative, who has power of attorney, discovered the transactions.

Fiscal Depute David Currie said the alarm was raised on February 10 2019 when the relative realised the bank account showed a much lower balance than expected.

He said: “It showed a number of unauthorised cash withdrawal transactions.

“These were at the lowest, £50, and at the highest, £250. The card was thereafter cancelled and police were informed.

“A check of CCTV at the Co-op in Tayport showed the accused accessing the account.

“The accused was cautioned and charged and during a police interview, said ‘I’m sorry I will pay it back’.”

The account showed she used the card a total of 26 times having visited the cash machine on 14 separate occasions, on some days making several withdrawals.

Leitch, who found the card and pin number inside a drawer in her grandmother’s home, plead guilty to a summary charge of theft.

She admitted that, on various occasions between December 28 2018 and February 8 2019, she stole the money using the ATM at the Co-op on Nelson Street, Tayport, by using a bank card and pin belonging to her grandmother.

Sheriff Alison Michie continued bail and deferred sentence until December 15.
