Perth musician ‘flashed’ at two women while flexing muscles in his living room

Callum Keys went on trial at Perth Sheriff Court.
Callum Keys went on trial at Perth Sheriff Court.

A Perth musician intentionally exposed himself to two women while he was flexing naked in his living room, a sheriff has ruled.

Callum Keys was seen strutting around his ground floor flat in the nude, with his arms behind his head, while he looked out at a mother and her daughter.

The 28-year-old guitarist claimed he was oblivious to the pair who were watching and videoing him from the street outside.

And he said he was shocked when several police officers turned up at his door in the early hours of the morning to arrest him.

Keys went on trial at Perth Sheriff Court accused of a breach of the Sexual Offences Act.

He broke down in tears when Sheriff William Gilchrist delivered his verdict.

“I am going to convict you of this section eight charge,” the sheriff told Keys.

Guitarist Callum Keys appeared at Perth Sheriff Court.

“I have no doubt whatsoever that you were intentionally exposing yourself to these two women.

“You were either doing this for your own sexual gratification or to cause the women some distress.”

Sheriff Gilchrist deferred sentence until next month for background reports.

Keys was not placed on the Sex Offenders Register.

Eye contact

The daughter, 20, told the trial she was visiting family in Perth on February 24 2021.

She said she first saw Keys, naked, at the window of his Friar Street property at around 7pm, when she arrived at her mother’s house nearby.

“He was flashing at the window,” she said.

“I saw everything.”

The student, who cannot be named, said Keys moved around the room and came back to the window.

She saw him again about two hours later when she left the house with her mother to drive to her grandmother’s.

Under cross examination by solicitor Jamie Baxter, the woman insisted Keys had made eye contact with her.

She said she took out her mobile and filmed him as they drove away.

“He went into the next room and came right up to the window while I was filming,” she said.

“He was still in a state of undress.”

The phone footage was not shown in court.

Muscle flexing

Her mother, 39, said she also saw Keys in his flat, flexing his muscles.

“I got the impression he was doing it for an audience,” she said.

“That’s what I took from his body language.”

The mum told fiscal depute Stuart Hamilton: “He had has arm, or maybe both his arms, behind his head.

“He was making everything very clear.”

She added: “It was a horrible feeling to experience something like that in front of your child.”

Midnight arrest

Keys denied that he had deliberately exposed himself but admitted he had been naked at home as part of his nightly routine.

He told the court he regularly exercised topless when he came home from work.

Afterwards he would eat, shower and then return to his living room naked.

He said he was embarrassed to admit he enjoyed admiring himself in the mirror.

“If at any stage it looked like I was giving a performance, it’s because I was giving a performance for myself,” he said.

“As someone who is a musician, I am aware of having an audience in front of me.”

He said police arrived at his home at about midnight.

“There was about five or six of them,” he said.

“They were knocking at my door and looking through my windows.

“They seemed to be under the impression I knew why they were there.”

He added: “They said that they’d seen a video.

“I gathered that someone had been filming me from outside.

“Later, two officers told me I was being arrested for a sexual exposure charge.”

Asked by Mr Baxter if he had intentionally exposed himself, Keys said: “No, I did not.

“In hindsight, I think I was just careless.”
