Dundee man on trial accused of drugging and raping two women in city

Michael Morley was acquitted of rape charges at the High Court in Dundee.
Michael Morley was acquitted of rape charges at the High Court in Dundee.

Jurors at Dundee High Court will decide whether a city man drugged and raped two women.

Michael Morley allegedly placed crumbs of Valium in his mouth, seized one of his victims by her head and kissed her, transferring the substance into her mouth and later raped her.

He is also alleged to have raped another woman on various occasions after administering Valium or a similar drug.

The jury of 10 women and five men have heard evidence across three days.

Lord Young will deliver his charge to jurors on Thursday morning before they retire to deliberate.

Neither complainer can be named for legal reasons and Morley denies all charges.

Vallium allegations

Morley is standing trial on allegations he raped one woman multiple times between January 2019 and July in 2020, in Dundee.

At his former property in Greendykes Road, Morley is accused of causing a woman to take Valium and then, when she was unable to consent, raping her.

In her speech after the close of the defence case, advocate depute Margaret Barron said the woman woke up naked beside him on multiple occasions and had no memory of how this came to be.

Ms Barron said Morley told her they had had sex and told her she had taken Valium but she claimed she did not knowingly take any.

Morley is also accused of sexually assaulting the woman on various occasions over the same time period by touching her breasts and private parts without consent.

He is further charged with acting abusively towards her at a property in Cardean Street by grabbing and smashing her phone outside a flat there.

Second complainer

A second woman was also allegedly targeted by Morley in 2020.

Morley is accused of raping her on three separate occasions, the first being in either April or May.

It is alleged this started as consensual sex but when the woman said to stop, Morley continued and she had to kick him off.

On another date in May, he is also accused of raping the woman by trying to have sex with her while she was asleep.

She said she woke to find him assaulting her.

Another charge alleges the woman was raped a third time, again in May, after Morley seized her by the head and kissed her, forcing crumbs of Valium into her mouth.

After she “blacked out,” Morley, of Cullen Place in Dundee, allegedly raped her again.

He faces a seventh and final charge alleging a six-month campaign of abuse towards her, including throwing her on to a mattress and performing a wrestling move named “the triangle” which restricted her breathing and also locking her in his flat.

Gave evidence

40-year-old Morley took to the witness box on Wednesday and told defence counsel David Moggach KC the only time the woman was ever locked in his flat was when she misplaced the only key.

Being cross-examined, Morley said he did not agree with his police interview in which he was quoted as saying: “I was like wow, you do bruise easily” to suggestions he nipped the woman until she was left marked.

He claimed he only “squidged” her knee and denied all other allegations.

The trial continues.
