A Perth pub-goer who smashed a glass over a man’s head has been ordered to pay compensation.

Kevin Stewart attacked family acquaintance Ryan McAuley at the city’s Robert Burns Lounge on County Place.

Perth Sheriff Court heard Stewart, 41, snapped after being told Mr McAuley had said something mean about his mother.

Stewart, of Darnhall Crescent, appeared in the dock and admitted the assault on September 25 2021.

Sheriff Craig McSherry fined him £400 and ordered him to pay £200 to his victim.

Handshake

Fiscal depute Andrew Harding told the court: “This took place at around 11.20pm.

“Mr McAuley entered the locus and approached the accused.

“He reached out as if getting ready to shake hands.”

Mr Harding said: “The accused stood up while holding a glass in his right hand.

“He then smashed it off his head.”

The fiscal depute added: “The doorman intervened and pulled the accused over the table and took him out.”

Already annoyed with him

Solicitor Paul Ralph, defending, said: “On this night, Mr Stewart was out with others.

“He is acquaintances with the complainer. Not exactly friends but they are not on bad terms in any way.”

The lawyer said: “Mr McAuley is friends with Mr Stewart’s mother and at this time Mr Stewart became aware that he had said something about his mother.

“That had upset him.”

Mr Ralph said: “Unfortunately, Mr McAuley entered the pub where Mr Stewart was sat, not knowing that he was already annoyed with him.

“He came over and Mr Stewart reacted as has been described.”

Stewart was originally charged by police with assaulting Mr McAuley to his injury.

However, prosecutors accepted that his victim had not been injured in the attack.
