Staff at Michelin in Dundee put their pedal to the metal in a charity fundraising drive to provide meals to needy families.

Employees raised £6,000 for Dundee Bairns with a raffle for electric bikes purchased by Michelin from Nicholson’s Cycles in Dundee.

Dundee Bairns was set up in 2016 to provide breakfasts and lunches during school holidays as a response to ‘holiday hunger. It then expanded to also deliver hot meals to after school clubs.

During the 13 weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown it has delivered more than 40,000 packed lunches to families throughout the city. In the four years since its inception Dundee Bairns has delivered more than 260,000 meals.

Chairman David Dorwood said: “In order to deliver our service to the community we need financial support and we have been very fortunate to receive funding from a wide variety of sources.

“When John Reid of Michelin approached us to say that the company were holding a raffle for staff, and all proceeds would be donated to Dundee Bairns we were delighted.

“We would wish to thank John and his staff, and Michelin for their generosity, during these very difficult times. Michelin has been not only a major employer in the city, but has over many years been very active in supporting the local community, and today is yet another example of the kindness and generosity of the company and the employees.”

Michelin has also been giving away face masks to community groups, including Dundee Food Train

Michelin factory manager John Reid said the employees were delighted to have been able to help the Dundee Bairns.

“During this time their work is even more import and for Dundee families who are struggling it’s a real lifeline,” he said.

“We also want to thank Nicholson’s for giving us a healthy discount of the bikes we used for the employee raffle.”

Michelin has also given away 4,000 face masks to community groups in Tayside.

Beneficiaries have included Angus Carers Centre, Home-Start, Dundee Survival Group, Dundee Food Train, Blood Bikes Scotland and Dundee Healthy Minds Network.
