Celebrations supporting past, present and future members of the armed forces will take place today.
Community groups will provide music and dance to kick off the annual Armed Forces Day festivities at City Square at 10am.
The main focus of the event, a military parade made up of contingents from local reserve forces, veteran associations and cadets, will march from Dundee High School at 12.30 via Reform Street to the square.
Lord Provost Bob Duncan said it was an important event for the city and its residents.
“I’m quite excited about it – it is a privilege to welcome our troops to the city,” he said.
“It is a celebration of the past, present and future. We have troops, veterans and cadets. It is great for the city too.
“It is a very important part of the city’s calendar. I’m hoping that the weather will be good and the event will draw lots of people in.
“We do the remembrance events in November, but this is a celebration. We always look forward to it.”
The event traditionally attracts large crowds to watch the parade, which works its way through the city throughout the afternoon.
A salute will be taken in Reform Street by the lord provost, who will be accompanied by Major General Riddell-Webster, governor of Edinburgh Castle, and Vic Herd, president of the Dundee’s combined ex services association.
Once formed up on the City Square, the lord provost, accompanied by Major General Riddell-Webster and Mr Herd, will be invited to inspect the parade.
There will also be stalls and displays in the square throughout the day, from a range of military regiments and local organisations.
The procession will be led by the Mains of Fintry pipe band. The band has become internationally recognised following performances at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and for Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.
