A 57-year-old man has been arrested after cops descended on a street in Dundee’s West End.
At least eight police vehicles were seen outside an address on Step Row just after 3.30pm on Wednesday.
Police remained in attendance throughout the night and into Thursday morning, with a cordon remaining on the street until 10.30am.
They have now confirmed a 57-year-old man was arrested at the scene and sent to Ninewells for assessment.
Shocked residents left confused
Residents reported seeing sniffer dogs and armed police in attendance.
They looked on in shock as officers entered and exited the property over a 20-hour period.
Four police vehicles, an ambulance and an incident response unit were still on the West End street early on Thursday morning.
Most of the police presence had left the area by 11am.
The exact nature of the incident is unclear – and many on the street were left confused.
One resident said: “There’s been police cars on the road as of Wednesday.
“I’m not sure what’s going on; they didn’t tell us anything. We just saw five armed officers on the street, so it’s a bit concerning to be honest.
“I’ve only been here a year but it’s pretty quiet.
“It was nearer the end of Step Row towards Magdalen Green.”
‘It’s making me really scared’
The owner of the nearby New Flavours House on Perth Road said: “Police have been here since we closed at around 6pm on Wednesday.
“And then when I came back this morning there was more, it’s very weird.
“If I’m honest, I’m a bit scared. There’s police more and more around here; it’s making me really scared.
“There’s plenty things happening on the Perth Road and I’m honestly considering moving my café.”
Another resident who lives on Step Row had been stopped by police after attempting to return to his home.
He said: “It’s been going on since about 4pm on Wednesday afternoon.
“There must have been about 15 police cars over the course of Wednesday and Thursday along with armed police with dogs.
“Police haven’t been going to people’s doors as far as I know.
“I left on Wednesday at about 9am and when I came back, they let me back in.
“I can’t get my van out and I needed to collect some things but they said I wouldn’t be allowed back for another hour or two.
“Nothing like this has ever happened before but I’m not too concerned.
“There was an ambulance there at around 10am, but there wasn’t one on Wednesday night.”
Heavy police presence in Dundee West End
Staff at EH9 Espresso said customers had been asking what was going on.
One staff member said: “I was working here on Wednesday and we closed at 6pm.
“There was police cars around Step Row but they’d closed off the road so I couldn’t see anything.
“I came back here at about 6am and there was one car and then around 8am there were four cars parked on Perth Road.
“It’s surprising to see this amount of police.
“I think every customer that’s come in has asked what’s going on and why there’s so many police cars.
“One couple that were just in said they live on Step Row and said they had to be escorted out and it was very strange because obviously something like that doesn’t usually happen.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to a property in the Step Row area of Dundee around 3.35pm on Wednesday, 16 February, following a report of concern for a man.
“Emergency services attended and the man, aged 57, has since been arrested. He has been conveyed to Ninewells Hospital for assessment.”
