Vandals have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to a series of bus shelters in Broughty Ferry, leaving locals disgusted.

Four shelters along the number 5 bus route were vandalised, with Dundee City Council promising they would be fixed as soon as possible.

The shelters, some of which have been completely destroyed, have all been targeted in the past week in what locals described as “pointless” acts.

Councillor ‘bitterly disappointed’

It follows a spate of similar incidents, including graffiti on the walls of Broughty Ferry Castle and damage to lifesaving equipment.

Broughty Ferry councillor Craig Duncan said the latest incidents had left him “bitterly disappointed”.

He said: “There is absolutely no need for this. I have no idea why anyone would do this but the financial implications to hard pressed taxpayers are obvious.”

Appeal for information

Mr Duncan say he has reported the vandalism to both Dundee City Council and Police Scotland, who have yet to attend.

He added: “I would appeal to anyone who knows anything about this to come forward.

“It is high time a determined effort was made to apprehend and punish the culprits as a deterrent to others.”

The shelters targeted are on Nursery Road, Balgillo Road and Strathmore Street.

One local resident said: “This seems to have been happening a lot recently.

“Something needs to be done as vandalism in Broughty Ferry recently has been getting out of hand.”

Budget costs

A spokesman for Dundee City Council said: “Bus shelters provide passengers with protection from wind and rain while waiting for the bus, so this vandalism will have a direct impact on local people.

“There is also an unnecessary cost to very tight budgets.

“The council will assess the damage and ensure that repairs are carried out as soon as possible.”
