A Dundee school reunion which saw ex-pupils travel hundreds of miles to attend has raised £800 for local good causes.

Around 150 former classmates from the old Whitfield High School got together on Friday night for a knees-up at Michelin Athletic Club — with some travelling all the way from Kent.

Altogether the sell-out event raised £1260 through ticket sales and raffles, of which £800 will be split between community group Link-Up Whitfield and Braeview Academy, which replaced Whitfield High.

Organiser Kevin Thomson said: “It was a fantastic night, everyone seemed to have really enjoyed themselves.

“We had a fantastic DJ who played retro tunes from back in the day, and an exceptional buffet.

“There was some humour too — we arranged for our old headmaster Mr Murphy to bring in his old strap and pretend to give someone the belt.

“We picked a former pupil who was too young to have been around when this was a thing.

“I met a few of my old school friends that I hadn’t seen in a long time and it was good to catch up with them.

“I stayed sober for the whole night as I wanted to make sure everything was going smoothly, but everyone else enjoyed a few drinks.”

Kevin organised the reunion after creating a nostalgia Facebook group called Whitfield High — The Wonder years, which quickly gained over 1000 followers.

Initially he hadn’t planned to host a reunion but was persuaded by friends.

Kevin added that the event passed without major trouble, save for one “unfortunate” incident of theft, when a woman had £30 stolen out of her handbag.

Kevin explained: “It was sad that this happened.

“It was a Whitfield event for Whitfield people and to steal from one of your own is not good.

“I gave the lady £30 back from our proceeds, which meant that it was £30 less for our causes.

“However, this one unfortunate incident did not spoil the night.

“Overall it was a great event and everyone had fun.”
