A Perthshire man who kicked-off outside a popular Dundee nightspot and assaulted police apologised to the court for his actions, saying there was “no excuse”.

Neil McDowall, 23, represented himself at Dundee Sheriff Court where he admitted assaulting a police officer and acting in an aggressive manner in the back of a police car after being arrested.

The court heard McDowall had been out with friends at the Grosvenor casino in the early hours of Sunday December 18 2022.

He ended up drunk and was asked to leave the casino.

Despite multiple warnings and requests to leave, heavily intoxicated McDowall refused, ending up in a scuffle with police officers.

Escalation

Depute fiscal Calum Brown told the court: “The incident started in the casino.

“Officers were called and attended a short time later.

“They offered the accused the chance to leave the building.

“Things then escalated but there was very little impact to the community as it was very early in the morning.”

The Grosvenor Casino

McDowall, of Campmuir, Blairgowrie, admitted assaulting PC Darren Healy and acting in a threatening and abusive manner on December 18 2022 at Grosvenor Casino, Marketgait.

Apology

In the back of the police vehicle, following his arrest, McDowall kicked the back of a seat while adopting an aggressive demeanour.

Asked by Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown to explain himself, McDowall said: “There is no excuse for my actions that night.

“I allowed myself to have too much to drink.

“I just had far too much to drink.

“I accept full responsibility for it.”

Sheriff Martin-Brown said: “You have no previous convictions.

“I am satisfied in this instance a fine would be appropriate.”

McDowall was fined £210, payable at £20 per month.
