West End councillor Richard McCready has urged Dundee City Council to ensure traffic restrictions affecting drivers heading along one of the city’s major routes are safe.
Motorists who frequent Riverside Drive have reported ongoing delays due to work in the area.
A contraflow system is in place so workers can strengthen a sea wall while there is also ongoing work close to Dundee’s V&A Museum which is causing delays for drivers.
Jenny Marra MSP was among the drivers to report “long tailacks”.
According to West End councillor Richard McCready, drivers can tolerate the inconvenience of the work as long as their safety is ensured.
In particular, the Labour councillor is keen to see the council address delays caused by drivers turning right from Riverside Drive on to Riverside Approach.
Mr McCready said: “The question is do people expect to come along there (Riverside Drive) and have to stop?
“From time to time, people are turning right. There is space for two to three cars, but after that it is blocking the road.
“It is something I have raised with the council before, but they felt it was preferable for cars to be able to make that turn to go up Magdalen Green or Riverside Approach.
“The safety of this is something which has been raised with me by a couple of people
“I have asked council officers to convince me of the safety and to make sure appropriate signage is up.
“People are aware there will be a level of inconvenience but we have to make sure that this is safe. Safety has to be the top priority.”
A spokesperson for Dundee City Council said: “The safety of all road users is important to the council and its contractor Balfour Beatty.
“This phase of the Dundee Flood Protection Scheme is signposted and has been in place for a number of months.
“Meantime we would ask drivers for their continued patience and diligence until work is complete in the autumn.”
