The progress of the new £28.7 million Baldragon Academy was revealed in a behind-the-scenes tour before the building’s February opening.
Cabinet Secretary for Finance and the Constitution Derek Mackay was given a guided tour of the new school, which will form part of a wider campus including the already-opened replacement for Sidlaw View Primary School and Jessie Porter Nursery.
He was joined by Dundee City Council leader John Alexander and children and families service convener Gregor Murray, as well as head teacher Kenny Hearn and senior pupils.
Mr Mackay said: “This fantastic new school will provide pupils with the environment and equipment necessary to reach their potential and realise their ambitions.
“Closing the attainment gap and improving education remains our number one priority and our focus to ensure every child, no matter their circumstances, has an equal chance to succeed is unwavering.
“I’m looking forward to Baldragon Academy’s completion. I like the light, bright, airy, modern environment. I’m sure the students will enjoy coming here.”
The new building features a large multi-purpose space which can be used for drama and other performance arts, assembly, serving food and recreating during break times.
A number of modern science labs and classrooms boast scenic views of the Sidlaw hills.
School captains Alex Barclay and Scott Oswald, both 17, said they were excited about moving to the new school next term.
Alex said: “With the size of the school and the brightness, I feel like it’s going to be a lot easier for the school to function.
“The facilities look far better than what we’ve got at the school just now.”
The project is being led by hub East Central Scotland in partnership with Dundee City Council, Scottish Futures Trust and Robertson Tayside.
Kevin Dickson, managing director, Robertson Tayside, said: “Working on the new Baldragon Academy has been a pleasure for the whole Robertson team and you can feel the excitement growing in the community as we near completion.
“The shared campus is state-of-the-art and I have no doubt it will be embraced by both pupils and staff.
“As a modern learning environment, it will have few rivals and I am sure it will serve many generations to come.”
