A group of transplant survivors celebrated their “second chance at life” at the weekend.
Peter Boag from Monifieth, Susan Alexander from Glenrothes and David Mushet from Paisley all took part in the Camperdown Park run in Dundee in preparation for the upcoming Transplant Games.
It held an extra special significance for Peter, 48, as it coincided with his transplant anniversary and birthday.
All three survivors are now gearing up for the 41st Transplant Games, which are taking place in Birmingham this August.
Peter said: “I had a very serious liver condition which came about in May 2015, with my initial treatment taking place in Ninewells hospital.
“The only real option I was given was going on the transplant list, an all or nothing one really – real ‘last rights’ sort of stuff.
“Twelve weeks later, I had received my transplant, all in all a remarkable recovery.
“I got this second chance at life and I thought ‘let’s make the most of this’.
“My first event after my transplant was the Santa Claus run in Monikie a few years back and I enjoy running so much I’m now doing a half marathon in Musselburgh in September.
He, Susan and David will be part of an Edinburgh team at the games, which feature contests in everything from athletics and volleyball to snooker and darts. All three had their transplants in the capital.
Peter said: “The games are a mixture of diverse events for all abilities for people recovering from transplants.
“They are a celebration of how important organ donation and transplants are and the importance of registering as a donor.
“Events like the games also help us pay tribute to our donors and their families for
Last year Peter won silver at the games, when they were held in North Lanarkshire.
This year’s competition takes place in Birmingham at a host of venues including Birmingham University and the Alexander Stadium.
