NHS Tayside has wished a very happy 90th birthday to a man whose dedication to public service is an example to all.

John MacGillivray is well known as a friendly face at the welcoming desk at Ninewells Hospital.

What people might not know is that he volunteered to help at the hospital after decades serving at the very top of the health profession.

He worked all over the UK until coming to Ninewells in 1974, where he became a consultant pathologist until retiring in 1990.

However, Mr MacGillivray had no intention of putting his feet up and letting everyone else get on with it.

On retiring, he began volunteering and helped at various projects including Meals on Wheels, Age Concern and as a guide on RRS Discovery.

He has been a welcome desk volunteer for the last five years.

NHS Tayside chief executive Grant Archibald and staff from Ninewells Voluntary Services helped celebrate the much-loved colleague on his 90th birthday with a card and balloons.

Mr MacGillivray said: “I find my volunteering role at Ninewells very interesting. I enjoy speaking to and interacting with people at the welcome desk.”

Mr Archibald said: “I would like to thank John for his years of volunteering on top of his years of service as a valued staff member.

“His dedication to helping others is hugely impressive and I’m delighted and honoured to be here today to help John celebrate his 90th birthday.”

Val Ewan, Voluntary Services manager said: “We are very grateful to John giving up his time every week to help patients and visitors by meeting people coming into Ninewells and providing directions to wards and appointments.

“I would like to wish John a very happy 90th birthday.”

So say all of us.
