Youngsters taking part in a pioneering music initiative were inspired when one of Dundee’s own home grown stars joined in yesterday.
Ged Grimes, the bassist in the band Simple Minds, visited Claypotts Primary School in the city, which is part of Sistema Scotland’s Big Noise orchestra programme.
The concept teaches a range of social skills through music, specifically an in-house orchestra.
It started in Venezuela some years ago and has spread across the globe, helping to build confidence among people from deprived communities.
The 57-year-old musician joined in a rehearsal at Big Noise Douglas which normally runs during the school year but is currently putting on a holiday club.
Ged, also a founding member of Dundee pop band Danny Wilson, said: “It’s a special feeling seeing the children’s confidence grow as they start to make music on their instruments and learn how to play together.
“Big Noise Douglas has had such a positive impact and is a great example of how music can transform lives.”
He urged everyone in the city to do their bit to support the youngsters.
“Local trusts have been very generous in making this happen so far, but I would encourage anyone who can afford to contribute to this fantastic initiative to help fund Big Noise Douglas,” he said.
“I have signed up for a monthly donation and hope that other Dundonians will do the same by going online and signing up.
“Anything from £5 a month will make a huge difference and allow us to work with the kids in Douglas for a generation.”
Andy Thorn, team leader at Big Noise Douglas, said: “We’re delighted that Ged has been able to visit our holiday club and see first-hand the positive impact that the Big Noise programme has for local children.
“Optimistic Sound has championed our work here in Dundee from the very beginning and their support has been absolutely vital for Big Noise Douglas.
“I hope that the big-hearted people of Dundee can help us transform even more lives, now and in the future.”
