Warning some Fife pharmacies could temporarily close due to significant demand

NHS Fife has warned some pharmacies could temporarily close or cut their opening hours due to the significant demand being placed on them.

Locals have also been urged not to stockpile medicines in a bid to to ensure sufficient stocks are maintained.

Director of pharmacy Scott Garden said any closure would be for a short period only and that a clear sign detailing the nearest opening facility would be posted.

He said increased demand could also lead to prescriptions taking longer to process and asked for the public’s patience and understanding.

“Local pharmacies are relied upon and have a crucial role to play in the response to coronavirus here in Fife,” he said.

“For this reason they will very likely be even busier than usual and we ask for the understanding of our local population as they manage that demand appropriately.

“While we appreciate the level of anxiety brought on by covid-19, it’s important that people order in a similar way as they would usually, by only ordering the medicines they need.

“This allows us to maintain sufficient stocks for all of those who may require it.”

Mr Garden said anyone displaying covid-19 symptoms, including a cough, fever or a cold, should not visit a pharmacy.

The same advice applies to anyone who feels generally unwell.

Advice on self-care is available at nhsinform.scot/coronavirus and if symptoms worsen, then contact NHS 24 on 111.

The website also includes a complete list of local pharmacies, where people can search for their nearest one if their usual one is closed.
