Three residents in a west Fife elderly care home have contracted coronavirus.

Orchardhead House confirmed the positive diagnoses and said all three were recovering from the illness.

The independent Rosyth home in Ferry Toll Road went into lockdown two weeks ago to protect residents and employees and said it had managed to maintain staffing levels.

A spokesperson said: “Orchardhead House Care Home in Rosyth has confirmed three of our residents have tested positive for Covid-19 and at this time are recovering well.

“Our care home and staff remain committed to keeping people safe and we are in daily contact with Health Protection Scotland following stringent guidelines to reduce the spread of infection.

“Prior to the lockdown we put in place our contingency arrangements to enable us to manage with predicted staff shortages.

“This has proved invaluable as we are maintaining a healthy staff ratio.

“All staff within the care home must be commended for their extra commitment during these trying times.

“We would like to thank families and carers for their support and value the positive feedback.”

Scottish Care, which represents independent care services, welcomed news that the residents were getting better.

A spokesperson said: “We are delighted to hear that residents with Covid-19 are on the road to recovery and this goes to show that even where there are cases in a care home, people can and do get better.

“This is positive and hopeful news for all of us in Scotland.

“The current trajectory of Covid-19 in Scotland means that unfortunately it is expected that we will continue to see individuals being confirmed as Covid–positive.

“Yet positively social care services including Orchardhead House are continuing to do all that they can to ensure that those in their care remain safe and well and that any spread of the virus is minimised.

“These are services in which staff are providing vital support to a vulnerable population through the commendable commitment and skills of staff – we applaud them for all they are doing to support our health and care sector, individuals and families at this difficult time.”
