Owners of the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews have been given the go-ahead to build a glass-fronted bar overlooking one of the most famous holes in golf.

Drinkers will be able to sit on the 77-seat bar’s terrace and watch some of the world’s greatest golfers in action on the 17th, known as the Road Hole.

It is hoped construction will be complete when the Old Course plays host to the 150th Open Championship in 2022. The five-star hotel’s planning application has been approved by Fife Council after no objections were received.

The hotel, owned by the Kohler Company, had “positive” talks about the project with the Old Course management and said they will have measures to ensure the bar has no impact on golfers in terms of noise.

The bar will be sited on the fourth floor of the hotel adjacent to the existing Road Hole restaurant.

Planning officials said: “The proposal would have limited impact on key views to and from the historic core of St Andrews and would be of a high-quality design in keeping with the quality of design established by the existing hotel building.”
