The aftermath of the accident

A woman has been taken to hospital after her car demolished a bus shelter in St Andrews.

The accident happened just yards from the community hospital on Largo Road which was itself extensively damaged when an Audi smashed into the back it less than a fortnight ago.

Police said the female driver of the Hyundai i10 appeared uninjured but was taken for precautionary checks by ambulance.

No-one else was hurt.

The crash at 10.20am is the latest in a spate of accidents involving cars crashing into buildings and other structures in Fife in the last two weeks.

On June 4, a holiday home in Crail was damaged when a car towing a caravan crashed into it.

The driver had taken ill at the wheel and was taken to hospital before being released.

The following day, a car overturned in a garden in South Parks Road, Glenrothes, after local teacher Gordon Suttie became unwell.

He sadly died in hospital.

The Co-op in Bennochy Road, Kirkcaldy, was badly damaged in the early hours of June 7 after a car careered off the road and into the back of the building.

Then, on June 8, an Audi ploughed into the back of St Andrews Community Hospital, causing serious structural damage and patients to be evacuated for a short time.

Three days later, a house in Crosshill was damaged when a car carrying a family with young children smashed into the front of it.

And last Tuesday two families had to be rehomed when a BMW crashed into a block of flats in Methil, causing considerable damage.

Finally, on Friday, a house near Cairneyhill was slightly damaged when a car carrying four people left the road and collided with the building.
