Cupar recycling centre to reopen next week – but users will need to book

Some containers will be removed but a new recycling point will open at Fluthers car park.

Cupar recycling centre will reopen next week but people will need to book a slot to use it.

The Coal Road site was closed suddenly on February 26 after a health and safety report revealed several serious concerns.

These included pedestrians walking into the centre and cars queueing on the road outside.

It has now been announced it will reopen on Thursday March 30 at 9am.

However, there will be a few changes to ensure the safety of the public.

Situation is ‘improvement but not ideal’

A booking system will be reintroduced at Cupar recycling centre to limit the number of cars at the site.

In addition, vehicles with trailers will no longer be permitted.

Cupar Recycling Centre will reopen next week.

And some some recycling containers, including a rubble container, will be removed.

The opening hours will be the same as before.

However, a new recycling point will open at Fluthers Car Park in Cupar for smaller items such as cardboard, glass and textiles.

SNP councillor Stefan Hoggan-Radu said the situation was an improvement but still not ideal.

“They have put in sensible precautions to make sure they can reopen it safely,” he said.

Fife Council searching for new site for Cupar Recycling Centre

Fife Council leader David Ross said Cupar recycling centre was not suitable for long-term use.

And he confirmed the council would be looking for a new site as soon as possible.

“There were serious concerns about some of the practices there,” he said,

“For instance, people were parking on the road, opening cars and walking onto the site, which they shouldn’t have been doing.

“The important thing is to get the site reopened safely, certainly in the short term.”
