Firefighters in Fife were called to a report of a car fire on the M90 between Rosyth and Dunfermline on Saturday afternoon.
Two appliances from Dunfermline were mobilised after the alarm was raised at 3.35pm.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the car involved had suffered an overheated engine, and that the call-out was treated as a false alarm.
It is understood the vehicle was on the hard shoulder between the Rosyth and Halbeath junctions, although traffic was slow moving in that area.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland also confirmed that no-one was injured.
