Police have released an image of a knife used to threaten a woman who suffered a terrifying rape ordeal in Methil.

The weapon used in the attack near Laird Avenue on January 29 has the word “Stellar” embossed on the handle and is pink on the handle and blade.

Detective Inspector Stuart Morris from Fife’s Public Protection Unit said the knife, recovered from the scene on the evening of the incident, could help track down the suspect.

And he urged anyone with information which could help bring the attacker to justice to “search their conscience” and contact police.

The scene of the attack.

“While the public response to this incident has been very encouraging, we have not yet identified the man responsible and it is imperative that members of the community help us bring this individual to justice,” he said.

“As you can see, this is a very distinctive knife which may have been bought individually or as part of a set, which could now be missing one from the collection.

“Do you, or someone you know, own a set like this, which is missing a knife? Do you know someone who you’ve seen in possession of a knife like this? If so, then please contact police immediately.

“A young woman was subjected to a very serious attack and I would urge anyone who believes they may have information to search their conscience and get in touch with us as a matter of urgency.”

A 20-year-old woman was attacked at around 8pm on Tuesday January 29.

She had walked along Herriot Crescent and onto Kirkland Road when she was approached by a man who brandished the knife at her.

The man then forced her into an area of wasteland, near to Laird Avenue, where she was sexually assaulted.

Police Scotland said efforts to trace the suspect were continuing and urged anyone with information to come forward.

The suspect is described as a white male, around 20 years old, 5ft 8in tall and of medium build.

He has light brown wavy hair and was wearing a dark waterproof jacket and dark tracksuits bottoms.

Those with information are asked to contact Fife’s Public Protection Unit via 101, quoting incident number 3508 of January 29. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

In the days following the incident a 26-year-old man was arrested and released without charge.

Police confirmed he was no longer a suspect.
