The Glen in Dunfermline was voted Scotland's best park.
The Glen in Dunfermline was voted Scotland's best park.

A Fife park has been voted the best in Scotland.

Pittencrieff Park topped a poll by parks and green spaces charity Fields in Trust.

MacRosty Park, in Crieff, and Pitlochry Recreation Ground were also among 10 throughout the country to achieve much loved status.

Pittencrieff Park, known locally as the Glen, was nominated for its diversity, including children’s play areas, glasshouses, historical features and a peacock sanctuary.

Its imaginative paths, rocky waterfall and well-stocked and neat flower beds and herb gardens were also recognised.

Helen Griffiths, Fields in Trust chief executive, said: “Congratulations to Pittencrieff Park and all the other much loved parks and green spaces in Scotland.

“We know that parks provide benefits to the physical health, mental wellbeing and community connections for people that use them.

“It is encouraging to see so many people celebrate how much they love their local parks.

“Fields in Trust is committed to protecting these vital parts of the UK’s community infrastructure for future generations to enjoy.”

Pittencrieff Park was bought in 1902 by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and gifted to the people of Dunfermline.

It welcomes more than 750,000 visitors each year who can discover its various gardens, including the Japanese garden, through a network of walkways.

An impressive array of trees include giant redwoods and an oak planted by Carnegie in 1909.

The park is also home to Pittencrieff House Museum and the art deco Glen Pavilion.

A statue of Carnegie can be found in the 76-acre park, as well as the foundations of the Malcolm Canmore Tower.

Visitors can also enjoy stunning views of Dunfermline Abbey.

The park hosts events throughout the year and holds Green Flag status, awarded by the Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign.

A record 364 nominations were received for UK’s Best Park 2019, of which 42 were in Scotland.

Those nominations were supported by park users, communities, Friends of Parks groups, and landowners and an unprecedented total of 36,832 votes were cast for parks and green spaces across the UK.

Among the other parts given ‘Much Loved’ status were Aden Country Park in Mintlaw,, Barshaw Park in Paisley, Belleisle Park in Ayr, Chatelherault Country Park near Hamilton, Figgate Park in Duddingston, Glencoats Park in Westpark Drive, and Levengrove Park, Dumbarton.
