One of the largest firework displays in Tayside is set to wow more than 5,000 people next weekend.
Arbroath’s Bonfire Night celebrations will be back with a bang on November 5, all thanks to community fundraising.
The Fireworks for Arbroath group was set up after locals became frustrated when the town’s annual official display was discontinued for 2014.
Not only did last year’s inaugural display surpass expectations, donations allowed the group a head start on making this year’s celebrations at Inchcape Park even better.
Fireworks For Arbroath chairwoman Karen Cuthill said: “It’s been hard work but rewarding to see what you can do when the community get behind you.
“The fireworks were paid for at start of October and any money thereafter goes towards 2017 display.
“The police thought we had about 5,000 people there last year and we are expecting similar this year
“If each person who comes gives £2, next year’s display would be paid for.”
Costing around £9,400 including VAT, the event promises to outdo last year’s £9,000 display, and events team 21CC has offered to donate the finale for free.
Karen told families preparing for the night to dress for cold weather, with sturdy footwear.
No sparklers are allowed but authorised glow products will be available.
In the years before 2014, the fireworks evening was organised by Arbroath West and Letham councillor David Fairweather and a volunteer group.
However, after his main volunteer group retired, he said the stress of hosting the celebrations was too much for him.
The display will begin at 6.30pm sharp.
A raffle will be held with 1,000 tickets for 100 prizes, with tickets available up to 4pm on the day via committee members.
Elsewhere in Angus on November 5, a fireworks display and bonfire will take place at the Black Slab car park in Carnoustie at 7pm, with a torchlight parade leaving Woodlands Primary School at 6.30pm.
Edzell’s celebration starts with a bonfire on the Muir at 6.30pm with fireworks 15 minutes later.
Kirriemuir and District Round Table hold their event on Kirrie Hill from 6pm and music from 5pm.
