Arbroath Musical Society revs up for Made in Dagenham

A group of amateur thespians will recreate a period of beehive hairstyles and roaring engines for a Tayside dramatic first.

Made in Dagenham first hit the silver screen in 2010 and told the story of the 1968 sewing machinists’ strike at Ford’s Dagenham plant, making $12 million at the box office before spurring a musical adaptation in London theatres in 2014.

And the Arbroath Musical Society will give their rendition of events at the Webster Theatre in February.

Members of AMS got their beehives, bobs and classic cars ready for the production at Glenford in Forfar, and got comfortable with motors which defined an era and were made in the Kent complex — a 1969 Cortina 1600e courtesy of Paul Johnson, and a 1970 Escort Mk1 and 1961 Anglia 105e owned by Aaron Fleming.

They even found time to stage their own mannequin challenge.

Tracy Gibson of the society said: “This is the first time these beautiful cars have been in a car showroom for nearly 50 years, quite a momentous occasion.”

The show runs from February 15 to 18, including a Saturday matinee.
