Film and video work from Scottish and international artists will be showcased in Angus this weekend.
Hospitalfield’s forthcoming CITIZEN events will give the public a chance to explore the house, learn about its history and get involved in talks, workshops and performances connected to the artists’ projects.
The exhibition will include Mumbai artist studio CAMP, Seamus Harahan, Winnie Herbstein and Runa Islam with workshops from Rebecca Brown and Margaret Salmon. The artists’ works show citizens and cities from across the globe.
Runa Islam has filmed rickshaw drivers at rest in Dhaka; Seamus Harahan has pictured the monumental and quiet evidence of separation in Northern Ireland; Winnie Herbstein has filmed car enthusiasts in Arbroath and the collective studio CAMP from Mumbai have filmed with families in Jerusalem.
CAMP worked with Palestinian families living in, or displaced from, their home to explore the rooms, windows, streets, fences, rooftops and distant places with Pan-tilt-zoom type security cameras.
The city of Belfast is present within many of Harahan’s video works, showing scenes of residential and civic areas as well as observations of individuals and groups
For CITIZEN, Herbstein will present a video, Circling Roads, which was created through encounters in Arbroath and the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, Islam will exhibit a 16mm film work First Day of Spring (2005) which was made in Dhaka.
It creates a roving portrait of a group rickshaw drivers who were choreographed to rest, the opposite of their usual daily activity, creating a peaceful scene with in the hectic sounds of the city.
Laura Simpson, programme manager, said visitors to the open weekend will be able to see “these exceptional international works as well as meet the artists during the talk and performance events”.
She said: “We look forward to welcoming everyone during these weekends which are a time to really get to know us and the house as well as see some inspiring art work.
“There’s a family friendly workshop on Saturday morning which teaches quick animation techniques and is run by artist and illustrator Rebecca Brown who was recently part of our Residency Programme.”
At various times throughout the weekend the Spring Cafe will be open for lunch and cakes and the house and garden will be open to explore.
