Dundee United manager warns of ‘repercussions’ for racist abuse

Dundee United manager Robbie Neilson has warned fans who shout racist abuse at players will not be tolerated at the Tannadice club.

Neilson was speaking after a fan was recorded apparently shouting “f***ing black b******” at Dundee striker Kane Hemming’s during Friday’s 1-1 draw at Tannadice.

The incident was capture by football video blogger Ben Crawford as he filmed the end of the match.

Although the perpetrator’s face is not seen, he can be heard apparently insulting the player after he attempts a shot on goal.

Supporters of both sides, as well as the clubs themselves, condemned the fan although some dispute what was actually said.

Dundee United and Dundee FC have both long supported the Show Racism the Red Card campaign and United manager Neilson said there would be “repercussions” for the supporter if an investigation can identify him.

He said: “The club has put out a statement and it is zero tolerance at United.

“It will get investigated and we will get to the bottom of it but, as was said in the statement, zero tolerance is key and there will be repercussions if required.

“It’s not acceptable and we know that.

“We need to try and nip it in the bud. It’s just not acceptable.

“We are just not having it at Dundee United Football Club.”

Neilson added: “We have a fantastic support and they have been absolutely amazing the whole time I have been here.

“The club are investigating and I’m sure it will be dealt with.”

A Dundee FC spokesman said: “Dundee Football Club condemns racism in any form, either on or off the pitch.

“The club strongly believes that racism has no place in football or society.”

Hemmings himself has also taken part in anti-racism campaigns.

Last year he took part in a programme with school children at the home of his former club Notts County.

It saw Show Racism the Red Card work with the club and Notts County Football in the Community to teach young people about racism.
