Meeting to demand support for crisis-hit Dundee health centre

Demands for more support for a crisis-hit Lochee health centre will be stepped up at a public meeting in Dundee.

NHS Tayside stepped in to take over the management of Lochee Health Centre in March due to staffing shortages.

Campaigners claim there is only one GP covering the centre and there are also shortages in the number of administration staff.

However, NHS Tayside said a new GP has been recruited and will be starting soon.

However, the Scottish Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition is organising a public meeting for Wednesday to call for increased support from NHS Tayside and the Scottish Government.

Lochee resident Lean Ganley, who stood for the TUSC at the General Election in May, said: “During the General Election the issue of a lack of GP provision and cuts to health provision came up again and again.

“There is a crisis in available GPs across Dundee and Tayside.

“In Lochee, for a number of months, there has been an ongoing problem with a lack of doctors for the population. And this is an area which has a life expectancy of 10 years less than Broughty Ferry.”

Ms Ganley said there is widespread demand for action to be taken to address the staffing problems at the health centre.

“This concern is reflected by hundreds who have signed the petition over the last few weeks,” she said.

“The public meeting has been called to take the campaign onto a new level and to demand action by NHS Tayside and Scottish ministers.”

Dundee’s Health and Social Care Partnership sent out an email last month asking for clerical staff to help out at the surgery.

The public meeting will take place at 7pm in Cox’s Café Bar on Lochee High Street.

A spokesperson for NHS Tayside said: “Lochee Health Centre was transferred to NHS Tayside at the start of March which means that Lochee Health Centre is managed by NHS Tayside.

“All Boards across Scotland continue to face challenges to recruit GPs and NHS Tayside is no exception.

“NHS Tayside continues to invest in Lochee Health Centre to secure sustainable service provision. We have recently recruited a full-time GP to Lochee Health Centre who will be starting shortly.

“We have also recently recruited an additional part-time GP who is already working in the practice.

“Lochee Health Centre continues to deliver healthcare services to its registered patients.

“These are being provided by an expanding multidisciplinary team, including our new GPs, locum GPs, community nurses, locality and community pharmacists and a nurse consultant for older people based in the practice supporting the Enhanced Community Support team.”
