A new survey has shown Dundee has the highest rate of car ownership in the UK.

Dundee has a higher rate of car-ownership than anywhere else in the UK, with over 81% of the eligible population having access to a vehicle.

The survey has also unveiled Dundee as one of the easiest places in Scotland to travel in.

While it might be regarded as unlucky for some, Dundee placed 13th on the Easy Travel Index list of 33 UK towns and cities.

The survey, conducted by the ESP group, examined how easy it was to use public transport in the city, and residents’ attitudes to public transport and car use.

The findings were presented to MP’s on Wednesday at a reception in Westminster as part of an investigation in to future transport use in the country.

Edinburgh was found to be the easiest city to travel in across the UK and York was deemed the best city to start a long distance journey from.

Research also found that more than 70% of Dundee residents would choose to take the car for local trips as opposed to public transport, more than any other Scottish city.

Dr Steve Cassidy, director of future travel at ESP group, said that Dundee’s position as a “digital city” could explain why public transport use was viewed positively.

He said: “People in Dundee appear to have access to the internet that is above the national average.

“It is wholly possible that people find travelling in Dundee easier because of access to travel apps and mobile technology that allows them to find where they are going more easily.

“The Easy Travel Index offers some real insights into the state of travel in the UK.

“With over half of the British public of the view that public transport does not meet their needs, and some common problems needing to be addressed, however, there are many opportunities to for cities to improve their performance.

“We will be repeating this research on an annual basis and I look forward to seeing some of those cities towards the bottom of the Easy Travel Index improve their rankings.”
