‘No suspicious circumstances’ surrounding woman’s death behind Dundee flats

Police in Dundee have said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the discovery of a woman’s body in the shared garden of a city tenement.

Officers were called to the block at 9 Arklay Street around 11pm on Saturday.

The woman’s body was found at the rear of the garden shared by residents of the close, which contains eight flats.

Police sealed off the entrance to the tenement as their investigations into the death began.

Officers remained on site overnight and cordoned off the doorway of the block, preventing access to the tenement.

An officer was also stationed at the rear door of a close at 10 Clepington Street as its garden backs on to the Arklay Street property.

A blue tent was put up on a piece of land in front of a small wall dividing the two properties and much of the Arklay Street garden was taped off.

Despite the significant police presence, nearby residents were unaware there had been an incident.

One Clepington Street resident, whose bedroom overlooks the two gardens, said: “I was in bed reading at 11 and didn’t hear a thing.”

One man living at 11 Arklay Street said: “I saw the police outside around 11.30 but just went to sleep.”

Police Scotland ruled out any suspicious circumstances into the death shortly before noon on Sunday.

A statement said: “Police Scotland can confirm that officers were called to a report of the sudden death of a female in the Arklay Street area of Dundee at around 11pm on Saturday.

“The death is being treated as unexplained at the moment and enquiries are still ongoing, however early indications suggest there are no apparent suspicious circumstances.”

Neither the name nor age of the victim was made public yesterday.

It is the second time in just over a month that a woman’s body has been found in Dundee.

On June 2, officers were called to land behind Nethergate following the discovery of a 34-year-old woman’s body.

Police later identified her as Rowan Soutar, of Tayport.

Rowan’s sister Shonagh Soutar said she had been battling heroin addiction for 12 years but she was desperately trying to get clean.
