Driver “no longer working” for Megabus after motorway terror

A coach driver who was filmed by a Dundee passenger as he scribbled notes while driving on the motorway is no longer employed by the bus  company.

Horrified passenger Ronnie Taylor told of his shock at the hair-raising journey on the Megabus from Birmingham to Glasgow.

The 59-year-old filmed the driver taking his arm off the wheel to overtake another vehicle, while holding the pen and paper in the hand he was steering with.

Ronnie said: “It was really scary.

“He was steering with his elbows all the way up the road and I saw he was taking notes.

“It looked like he was taking down registration numbers. You can see in the video that he is overtaking while he’s doing it.

“All of the other passengers were behind the driver so they didn’t see what he was doing.

“You should always be in control of a bus – it’s a 60 tonne killing machine.

“He put lives at risk and he should be sacked.”

The incident took place last Monday on the M6 in Lancashire.

Ronnie reported what he saw to the bus company, who then launched an investigation after viewing the footage.

A spokesman for Megabus explained that the driver was not employed in any of the Scottish branches and added that he no longer works for the company.

The spokesman said: “Safety is our highest priority. It’s at the heart of our driver training programme and we expect every driver to uphold our high standards.

“We were very concerned at what the video shows and we immediately took steps to contact the customer and follow this up internally.

“We can confirm that the driver involved no longer works for us.

“We would like to thank the customer for bringing this issue to our attention.”

Road safety experts this week called on the police and the courts to “get tough” on drives who put other road users at risk.
