A crowdfunding campaign to expand the number of Dundee-linked discoveries showcased on the new waterfront’s Discovery Walk has been launched.

In March nine plaques commemorating people from or connected to Dundee who have made significant contributions to science and society were unveiled.

The aim of the fundraising campaign is to install five more plaques over the next couple of years, as part of the second phase of the project.

A limited edition of 2,000 special commemorative badges has been produced for sale at £5 each in selected retailers around the city, with proceeds doing towards the campaign.

Kelly-Ann Marr, chair of the Discovery Walk Steering Group, said:  “As the Chair of the Discovery Walk Steering Group I am very excited that so many Dundonians have the opportunity play their part in the waterfront redevelopment by supporting the installation of the next five plaques of Discovery Walk.”

The nominees being honoured in Phase Two are: postage stamp pioneer James Chalmers; electrical scientist James Bowman Lindsay; inventor and instrument maker George Lowden; doctor and health reformer Thomas Maclagan; and doctor and x-ray pioneer George A Pirie.

The commemorative badges can be bought at Eduardo Alessandro Studios, Frameworks Studios, The Windsor Gallery, Dobbie’s Garden Centre, Groucho’s Record Store and Tatha Gallery.

The Discovery Walk is designed to honour the pioneering spirit of those whose scientific and social achievements helped make Dundee an the wider world a better place.

The plaques currently in place pay homage to D’Arcy Thompson, Geoffrey Dutton, James Alfred Ewing, James F Riley, Margaret Fairlie, Mary Ann Baxter, Mary Lily Walker, R D Low, Walter Spear and Peter Le Comber.
