Barnhill post office service closed due to operational issues

There is a “worrying” shortage of Post Office services in Broughty Ferry, after the Barnhill branch was forced to close due to technical issues.

Ferry ward representative Councillor Philip Scott said he was concerned by the temporary closure, which has been in effect for more than a fortnight.

Operational issues are being blamed for the cessation of the service, with the Post Office – which is now an entirely separate entity to Royal Mail – recommending customers use branches in Broughty Ferry and Monifieth, something Mr Scott said may not be feasible for elderly residents.

He said: “I am not quite sure how the system can still be non-operational given how long it has been down for.

“The people of Broughty Ferry and Barnhill deserve an explanation of what is going on.

“It can be hard for elderly residents to make it to Post Office branches further away, which is why it is important the issues in Barnhill are sorted promptly.

“It is worrying to think the service provision in the area is not good enough, given the Barnhill closure and the temporary status of the Broughty Ferry branch.”

Broughty Ferry Post Office was established “temporarily” earlier in the year and it is understood a permanent location will be found by the autumn.

The post office temporarily reopened in the Nisa premises in April after the supermarket unexpectedly closed in January, but only on a short-term basis.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Barnhill Post Office branch in Dundee.

“We would like to reassure customers that we are working hard to restore the service to the community as soon as possible and are committed to maintaining services in the area.

“In the meantime, customers can access Post Office services at any other convenient branch including, Broughty Ferry Post Office and Monifieth Post Office.”
