A man has died after being recovered from the River Tay at Dundee waterfront.

Emergency services rushed to the Dundee Sea Cadet Centre at Camperdown Dock at about 1pm on Tuesday following reports of a person in the water.

The fire and rescue service, HM Coastguard, paramedics and the RNLI were all called to the scene to assist police.

A man in his 60s was taken to Ninewells Hospital following the rescue operation, however he could not be revived.

A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland along with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and HM Coastguard attended Camperdown Docks, Dundee, shortly after 1pm today (April 3) in response to reports of a person in the water.

“A man was recovered from the River Tay and taken to Ninewells Hospital, however it was not possible to revive him and he has sadly died.

“Inquiries are ongoing to identify him and notify his next of kin at this time, and also to establish the circumstances as to how he came to be in the river.

“If you believe you have any information which could assist us, please call 101 or speak with any Police officer. Our reference is incident 1339 of April 3.”

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 1.13pm today to attend an incident at East Camperdown Street, Dundee.

“We dispatched one ambulance and a paramedic response unit to the scene and transported one male patient in his 60s to Ninewells Hospital.”

A local resident is believed to have alerted the emergency services after hearing “cries for help”.

A man was spotted by a passerby earlier in the afternoon apparently jumping over a secured gate close to the Sea Cadet Centre.

Three fire and rescue appliances were sent from the Kingsway along with a further two from Blackness Road.

The Broughty Ferry lifeboat was called out at 1.10pm.

The incident coincided with a separate one on the Tay Road Bridge, which saw traffic backed up along Dock Street for a short time.

The stop message was given by fire officers shortly before 1.50pm. Police – both uniformed and plain clothed CID officers remain at the scene.
