A Fife solicitor is to appear on a new BBC series in which up-and-coming designers compete for a commercial contract for a top London hotel.

Terian Tilston, 30, will be one of 10 participants vying for the accolade on the BBC’s Interior Design Masters.

The solicitor said she had “no idea” what to expect from the series.

She said: “I applied on a whim and I didn’t even think my application would be read, let alone considered.

“I mean, who am I to be selected to be selected for a huge TV show, right?”

The eight-part series is to be presented by Fearne Cotton. Former editor of Elle Decoration, Michelle Ogundehin will act as the main judge, working alongside a different guest judge each week. Guests will include Mary Portas, Jade Jagger and Naomi Cleaver.

Terian, who studied at Dundee University, spoke of her “complete shock” in being selected for the final 10.

She initially thought the show would be a small production. But when she saw the cameras and crew in London, she realised its scale.

She described the experience as “a real Dorothy ‘I’m not in Kansas anymore’ moment”.

Terian is influenced by various people in her interior design work, including her mother and grandmother.

She is also inspired by the work of Sophie Robinson, who is due to appear as a guest judge. She said she admires Robinson’s use of colour, but says their styles are “pretty different”.

She added: “I would like to think I was pretty unique in my designs”.

During the six-week competition, contestants will be set different commercial design challenges. Each task will test the contestants’ skills in areas such as show homes and hair salons.

Judges will then scrutinise each contestant’s work alongside the guest judge for that week.

Two competitors will be eliminated each week.

Terian faces competition from all over the UK in her bid to secure the London hotel commercial contract.

The first episode of Interior Design Masters will air on Wednesday August 14 at 8pm on BBC2.
