Police are investigating an attack on a nine-year-old boy in Glenrothes.

The boy’s mother said her son was left bleeding from the lip after being set upon by a group of youths in the town last Friday.

She said he was targeted because he had an English accent.

“I don’t want my kids growing up seeing things like that and thinking it’s acceptable because it’s not,” said the boy’s mother.

Two school-age boys have since been reported to the Youth Justice Management Unit in connection with the incident.

“I got a phone call from this lady who said your son’s been assaulted,” she said.

“I drove to the park and they were all there. My son was sobbing and his mouth was burst open.”

The woman said the incident involved a group of at least 12 youngsters, some of whom surrounded her car and verbally abused her daughter when she drove to the scene.

She added: “Even as I got into the car they were at the car window. They had no fear.

“I was in shock and I was shaking because I was so angry about the way they were speaking to my daughter.

“It was intimidating because they wouldn’t back off. They were right up at my car window and everything. I couldn’t believe it.

“I’ve never phoned the police in my life.

“Parents really need to start knowing what their kids are up to.”

Police Scotland confirmed officers in Glenrothes had received reports of an assault of a school age boy by another child of school age last Friday.

A police spokesman said: “Two school age boys will be reported to the Youth Justice Management Unit.”
