Extreme care pledged as Fife local services resume gradually

Fife Council local services are to resume with the same phased approach taken by the Scottish Government, said the authority’s top officer.

Council chief executive Steve Grimmond said services will resume gradually in line with public health advice, with the safety of staff and the public top priority.

Mr Grimmond also thanked the public for their patience as the country entered the first phase of lockdown restrictions easing.

He said: “We’re already seeing a few services get back up and running but we have to be extremely careful about how and when we do this.

“The response from the public so far, and the support received has been amazing. It’s important that we stick together now and get through this recovery phase without jeopardising all the good work that’s gone on before.”

Some recycling centres opened on Monday morning and plans are being made for the return of pupils in August to Fife’s classrooms.

Also restarted on Monday were some roads and street lighting maintenance and inspection and planning for resumption of some critical construction works.

Mr Grimmond told the public: “Many of our services will continue to be available online and remotely over the coming weeks and months.

“The majority of our buildings will remain closed as we work out new ways of working safely, so please don’t try to come back to any of our facilities until we issue updates about individual services.

“We will let you know as and when things change, and thanks, once again, to everyone for the fantastic response from our communities as we work through this crisis together.”

Many council employees redeployed from their usual jobs to support critical services at the start of lockdown in March.

Around 760 are in the Team Fife volunteer pool to help the response to coronavirus and more than 8,000 staff members are working from home.
