Agatha’s parents thank public for support in leukaemia fight

A Fife mother has thanked the people of Cupar for their support in helping her daughter fight leukaemia.

Karen King and her husband Kevin only moved to the town months before daughter Agatha was diagnosed with the illness in February 2015.

However, after more than two years of treatment, the brave six-year-old is preparing to conclude her chemotherapy, marking the occasion with a series of fundraisers for charities that have helped her in her battle.

Highlighting the support of the local community, Karen said: “We really didn’t expect it at all.

“We had only moved here six months ago and Agatha wasn’t even at school yet.

“We just want to give back a little so that the next unfortunate family can have the support that we have had.

“Money just seems to disappear during treatment on things like parking, food, and childcare.”

Agatha will take her last chemotherapy tables on Monday July 10, a day Karen says she is “very much looking forward to”.

However, while Agatha’s chemotherapy may be coming to an end, she will continue to have appointments and treatments in the months ahead.

Should her recovery continue, however, then a special port that the youngster has had installed to help administer her medication could be removed next year.

As part of the family’s fundraising push, a charity golf day has been organised to take place at Ladybank Golf Club, along with a silent auction.

Keen not to be left out, Agatha has also helped her teacher to organise a disco at St Columba’s RC Primary School later this month.

Among the charities that will benefit from the events are Children with Cancer and Leukaemia Advice and Support for Parents (CCLASP), Tayside Children with Cancer and Leukaemia (TCCL) and Ward 29 at Ninewells.

Looking to the future, Karen added: “It has been a long two and a half years but in some ways it has also gone by quite quickly.

“Agatha has always said that she would like a trip to Disney but that probably won’t be another year or so, but that’s our aim.”

Further details of the fundraising events are available at the Agatha’s Silver Lining Facebook page.
