A man has been taken to hospital after his car plunged into the River Tay.

Emergency services raced to the scene off East Shore Road in Newburgh at around 4:44pm on Friday.

It is understood that the vehicle, which was last night completely submerged under water, was seen driving at speed in the area before the accident.

Eye-witnesses reported seeing the car “flying” over the edge of the harbour area into the water.

They said that the man, whose identity is not known, managed to free himself after around 45 seconds before being plucked to safety by a local boat.

He was passed over into the care of waiting paramedics with the Scottish Ambulance Service.

The Broughty Ferry Inshore Lifeboat was also in attendance.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “ We were called at 4.44pm to reports of vehicle entering the water at Newburgh with a man inside.

“One male casualty was brought out of the car by a boat.

“We remained on scene for the Coastguard to arrive and confirm the safety of the vehicle.”

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed the man had been taken to hospital but said the incident was on-going last night.
