Traffic chaos as serious crash closes main road between Perth and Dundee

Three people have been taken to hospital after a serious accident closed the main road between Perth and Dundee.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene near the slip road to Kinfauns on the A90 following a crash said to involve a people carrier and an artic lorry at noon.

Investigators at the scene of the A90 crash.

The road, one of the busiest in Tayside, was closed in both directions to allow a medical helicopter to land, in what Traffic Scotland described as a “serious road traffic collision”.

Three people have been taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

Traffic builds up behinds the cash on the A90

The road reopened to traffic heading towards Dundee at 2.45pm but the southbound carriageway remained closed for investigations.

The road was completely closed earlier in the day.

Traffic is said to be “nose-to-tail” on neighbouring side-roads as a result of the incident.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said three people were taken to Ninewells.

“We received a call at 1150 hours today to attend a road traffic collision on the A90 at St Madoes Junction in Perth.

“We dispatched three ambulances, our special operations team, two trauma teams – Helimed five and the Tayside Trauma Team – and a manager to the scene.

“We transported three patients to Ninewells Hospital.”

A police spokesperson said: “The A90 now has one lane open north (Dundee) bound after the serious road traffic incident at St Madoes.

“South (Perth) bound will remain closed at Glendoick for some time. The back road from Glencarse to Kinfauns has had to be closed as well due to volume of traffic.

“We recommend if you’re travelling from Dundee to Perth, divert via the A923 – Coupar Angus – A94 until further notice.”

One motorist who drove past the incident said: “The air ambulance is there and there are three or four fire engines and an NHS trauma team.

“I got over the Friarton Bridge and the traffic was starting to back up. It certainly looks worse going south.

“Northbound traffic is moving a little better.”

A fire and rescue spokeswoman said three appliances and a heavy rescue unit were called to the scene from Perth.

She added: “We received the call from the ambulance service at 12.04pm. It was a report of a one minibus and one artic lorry on the A90.

“We were in attendance but left it to the ambulance service to deal with.”

Police asked motorists to avoid the area.

A spokesman said: “There is a road traffic collision on the southbound A90 near the Kinfauns slip road at the moment.

“Both carriageways are closed and we already have a large build up of traffic.

“If you can avoid this at all, please try to do so.”
